I've been a Mental Health Therapist in private practice since 2012. I received my Master's degree in Seattle, WA and have been practicing in Walla Walla, WA since 2022. I love working with many different ages and demographics and like to keep an open mind and stance as we get to know one another.
Being a therapist is rewarding to me on many levels. I believe it's both my responsibility and privilege to join people where they are, whether they're struggling through a difficult life event, moving through a life transition, or grappling with their meaning and purpose. The relationship of trust we develop is one of the most important foundations to successful therapy. And it will be a primary value during our work together. People often describe me as warm and compassionate, with a grounding presence and gentle approach to the work. Alongside a little humor and challenging nudges towards growth.
Interpersonal relationships are the focus of our therapy. I work with individual adults on issues that stem from any relationship with others. Often, these are related to one’s family of origin. I use family systems theory and behavioral methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), among other types of therapy. I provide emotional support for those experienced religious abuse. I won’t impose a belief system on you. I’m here to listen to you as you find yours.
There is a lot of talk these days about narcissistic abuse. It is important to note that diagnosing someone else with narcissistic personality disorder—or anything else is not helpful or possible in the course of your therapy. Knowing how to respond to a difficult person, whether or not they have narcissistic tendencies, is what will have the most positive impact on your life.
I declared a psychology major as an undergraduate in 1984, and working with people has been my life-long professional focus. I hold two master of arts degrees: Psychology with an emphasis in behavioral medicine from the University of the Pacific, Stockton, CA (1990), and marital and family therapy from the University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA (1993). I also earned a doctoral degree in counseling Psychology (Psy.D.) from the University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA (2005).
I’m Dr. Sean Burson, a licensed therapist in Washington and Idaho. My background includes work in hospice care, ministry, and military settings, which has shaped how I listen and care for people. I bring a grounded, compassionate presence and value building real trust with my clients. I believe our stories deeply shape who we are, and therapy can help us understand and rewrite them with intention and hope.
I work with individual adults and certain families who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, sad, lonely, sensitive, anxious, or defeated. If you're feeling heavy by everything going on, or feeling frantic, or having conflict in your relationships or are just feeling lost in any way, I would love to see if I can help! I also work with family units going through transition or strain, such as conflict between a parent and their adult child, or supporting parents who are experiencing difficult things with their child or teen.
I have a lot of experience helping people through loss, whether it's a breakup, losing a job, or a loved one - including loss of a pet, which is a specialty of mine. I have special interest in supporting other therapists, and also community organizers and activists who are engaged in social justice work. Many of my clients are trans or NB, and others are gay, lesbian, or queer. Poly and kink affirming.
I offer telehealth services to clients in California, Idaho, Washington, or Virginia.

I’m a licensed psychologist with more than three decades of experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment, and trauma-informed care. My background includes extensive work with adults, adolescents, and children across private practice, medical settings, and the VA’s PTSD clinic, where I provided both treatment and disability evaluations. I completed my doctorate at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in an APA-approved Counseling Psychology program and an APA-accredited internship with broad training in assessment, psychotherapy, and multidisciplinary collaboration. I specialize in trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, dissociation, family-of-origin issues, and helping people untangle long-standing patterns that keep them stuck.
