I am Theresa Abbah, a board-certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner based in Smithfield, North Carolina, with over 27 years of experience in nursing and mental health care. My professional journey has been deeply rooted in psychiatry, where I have developed a broad and comprehensive clinical skill set focused on delivering compassionate, patient-centered care.
I spent more than 15 years working as a psychiatric nurse in an inpatient state mental health facility, which provided a strong foundation in managing complex mental health conditions. I am proud to have been one of the pioneers involved in establishing Youth Behavioral Health services, helping guide its successful accreditation and commitment to maintaining high standards of care.
As a Nurse Practitioner, I have advanced my practice working in both youth and adult inpatient behavioral health settings, including roles with UNC Youth Behavioral Health Hospital in Butner and UNC Johnston Health. I specialize in diagnosing and managing a wide range of mental health disorders, conducting crisis assessments, and providing timely referrals for individuals of all ages experiencing psychiatric, substance use, neurocognitive, or developmental challenges.
In 2018, I independently developed an alternative psychotherapy-based psychosocial treatment program to support patients in crisis at UNC Wakebrook, reflecting my commitment to innovation in mental health care.
I bring a positive attitude, creativity, and a high level of dedication to my work, consistently striving to deliver evidence-based care to patients and their families. My clinical strengths include psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, crisis stabilization, maintenance treatment and leadership, all of which guide my mission to improve mental health outcomes and support individuals on their path to recovery.
I am a compassionate, person-centered Clinical Counselor with over 20 years of experience in the fields of mental health and addiction treatment. Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of settings, including hospitals, military families, inpatient and outpatient programs, schools, and clients' homes, supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
I believe that every person has the capacity for growth, healing, and positive change. My approach is grounded in empathy, respect, and a non-judgmental attitude, creating a safe space where clients can feel heard, understood, and supported. I work collaboratively with clients, recognizing that they are the experts in their own lives, and helping them build on their strengths to regain a sense of balance, confidence, and well-being.
My goal is to support you on your journey toward meaningful and lasting change while fostering hope, resilience, and personal empowerment.

I got my MA in Dance/Movement Therapy and Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2009 and have since worked mostly in community mental health. Welcome and thanks for visiting! I am a licensed clinical social worker with a BSW from NC A&T and an MSW from Fayetteville State University. I have a passion for maternal health and over a decade of experience in this field. I love what I do and I look forward to connecting with you.
Good to meet you.
Research shows that the single most significant driver of change in therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. I believe effective counseling requires compassion, acceptance, empathy, trust, curiosity, honesty, and a true sense of connection.
I am an EMDRIA certified EMDR therapist. I specialize in complex trauma, especially within relationships and attachment. This means that most of my clients struggle with anxiety, shame, depression, low self-esteem, people-pleasing, codependency, disordered eating, attachments and communication. My niche is working with "cycle breakers" who are navigating how to get unstuck from learned patterns that are no longer serving them. They are often adult children of emotionally immature parents. Dysfunctional patterns often begin long before adulthood and can be rooted in painful family dynamics and/or generational trauma.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Postpartum Therapist in Raleigh
Finding postpartum therapists in Raleigh starts with identifying the kind of support that fits your needs. Postpartum concerns can include postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, birth-related stress, identity shifts, and relationship strain. Some people also look for therapy for perinatal depression or support during pregnancy from a prenatal depression therapist. As you compare therapists, look for listed experience in perinatal mental health counseling, postpartum care, and related specialties. A Perinatal Mental Health Certification, or PMH-C, can also signal specialized training.
Raleigh offers a strong mix of local therapy options, and virtual care can make the search easier for new parents with changing schedules, infant care needs, or physical recovery to consider. Some people prefer in-person sessions near home, work, or a familiar part of the city, while others prefer virtual appointments that fit around feeding, naps, or childcare. When narrowing your options, review appointment availability, whether a therapist is accepting new patients, session structure, and whether a free phone consultation is offered. Provider bios can also help you understand a therapist’s communication style, experience with postpartum concerns, and approach before you book.
Therapy in Raleigh can be a significant investment without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs and make ongoing care more affordable. Headway helps you find Raleigh therapists who work with postpartum concerns, accept a wide range of insurance plans, and offer upfront cost estimates after you enter your insurance details. You can browse therapists, review bios, compare availability, and book directly when you’re ready.
