Sometimes it feels like you're carrying more than anyone else realizes. Anxiety, depression, painful experiences, parenting responsibilities, cultural expectations, or major life changes can leave you feeling emotionally exhausted and unsure of how to move forward. You may be taking care of everyone else while struggling to care for yourself. You don't have to keep doing it alone. I partner with individuals experiencing anxiety, stress management, panic disorder, cultural and ethnic issues, and trauma so they can build resilience, strengthen relationships, and create a greater sense of balance and confidence in their everyday lives. Working with adolescents, adults, and families, I strive to create a compassionate, culturally responsive environment where you feel genuinely heard, respected, and empowered to grow. Over the past ten years, I’ve had the joy of working with wonderful, diverse communities—from LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC individuals to those navigating mental illness, homelessness, and co-occurring challenges. As a child of immigrants myself, I truly understand the cultural barriers around mental health. I’m here to help break down those walls and create a warm, safe space where you feel genuinely seen, heard, and supported.
I am a military veteran with over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, with a specialized focus over the past decade on men’s mental health, including court-ordered assessments and mandated treatment services. My clinical approach is grounded primarily in evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which I utilize to support clients in developing emotional regulation, coping skills, and sustainable behavioral change. In my current role, I conduct comprehensive mental health screenings, coordinate and oversee integrated care services, and provide direct clinical support within a substance use inpatient treatment setting. Additionally, I dedicate part of my practice to serving a rural Tribal Native American community through a mental health clinic, where I provide culturally responsive and community-informed care.
I also strongly advocate for men navigating systems where they are often disproportionately penalized or misunderstood, working to ensure their mental health needs are appropriately recognized and addressed within legal, correctional, and treatment environments. My professional focus includes supporting fair, trauma-informed approaches that balance accountability with rehabilitation. I have specialized experience working with individuals diagnosed with psychotic disorders and mood disorders, providing psychoeducation to clients and their families—particularly during the early stages of diagnosis—and delivering life skills training to promote stability, independence, and long-term success in community living.
I have 6+ years of working with both individuals and couples. I work to create an atmosphere free of judgement while trying to be as direct as possible.
I specialize in trauma-informed care for survivors of trauma including sexual assault, domestic violence, and sex trafficking.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Psychotherapist with experience in individual and group therapy since 2017. My approach is trauma-informed, empowering, and client-centered, tailored to meet the unique needs of adults, children, and families. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, which help clients develop healthier thought patterns, reframe their personal stories, and enhance motivation for change.
With experience supporting individuals facing severe and persistent mental health challenges, as well as those with sexually maladaptive behaviors, I create a safe and supportive space for healing and personal growth. Since opening my private practice in 2023, I have been committed to helping clients build resilience, navigate life’s challenges, and improve their overall well-being.
If you’re looking for a compassionate therapist dedicated to fostering healing and transformation, I would be honored to support you on your journey.
Alex McLeod holds an MSW, and LICSW and was a top graduate at Saint Catherine University Master’s program. He was featured in IMPAAKT Magazine’s cover story topping the list for most influential mental health leaders of 2024. He has a 7 year career working in human service including therapy-based shelter care, corrections work with felony level teens, probation, experience with the Minnesota Board of Public Defense, and 5 years outpatient therapy experience. Alex also teaches a university class on the correlations between anatomy and pathologically violent behaviors.
Alex sees a wide range of cases normally involving PTSD and mood disorders, including but not limited to: Anxiety Disorders, Depression, PTSD, Bipolar 1 & 2 Disorders, and ADHD accompanied by behavioral and emotion dysregulation issues. The symptoms that his clients may experience include debilitating anxiety, which in many instances presents as feeling paralyzed and unable to move forward, excessive fear and worry, describing that they feel as if they are “going crazy,” ruminating and playing negative imagery repeatedly, sometimes becoming emotionally reactive in the form of excessive anger, crying fits, and emotional breakdowns. Often these issues may lead to disrupted social, familial, and romantic relationships which become chaotic, tense, or distrusting. For these reasons, he also sees individuals who have partners experiencing such symptoms, as well as those who are experiencing breakups or divorce. It is not uncommon for Alex to see clients who have experienced traumatic backgrounds, or difficult family upbringing.

I have experience working with a variety of diagnoses, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, Autism, ADHD, etc. I have also worked with individuals with mild to moderate cognitive disabilities in addition to their mental health diagnoses.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Therapist in Minnesota
Searching for therapists in Minnesota starts with finding care that fits your needs and location. Minnesota therapists support people with concerns like anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, work stress, and life transitions. Available care can vary between urban and rural parts of the state, so it helps to look for a therapist whose listed specialties, training, and approach match what you want to focus on.
Whether you’re looking for therapy in Minnesota near Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, or a smaller community, logistics can shape which therapist is the right fit. Some people prefer in-person sessions, while others choose virtual therapy for more flexibility with scheduling. As you compare Minnesota therapists, review appointment availability, whether they offer a free phone consultation, and how they describe their style in their bio. Profiles can help you understand what sessions may feel like before you book.
The cost of mental health care in Minnesota varies, and using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs. Headway helps you search for therapists in Minnesota who are accepting new patients, check your insurance, and see an estimated out-of-pocket cost before booking. Nationally, Headway partners with 100+ insurance plans, making it easier to browse therapists, review bios, and book directly when you’re ready.
