Aloha, my name is Akoni Kanaele. I provide compassionate, culturally responsive support that is trauma informed. I strive to create a safe and nonjudgmental environment. I work with individuals navigating stress, relationships, life transitions, emotional challenges, and personal growth. My approach focuses on building on each client’s strengths, developing practical coping skills, and creating meaningful, positive change.

I have lived in Hawaii for 12 years now and am originally from New York State. My dad lived on Kauai my whole life so my connections and roots are here. In my personal time, I love to take care of animals, eat healthy, and enjoy the island. I believe that mental health is a whole body and system approach. I have worked with children and adolescents my entire career. My presence has been strong in the school system so I know how to navigate that culture and those rules as well.

Never thought I'd be a psychologist, but here I am and I love it. I've worked in the music industry, with animals, at coffee shops and yes, Chuck E. Cheese. I have returned to my hometown in Hawaii and embrace the laid back lifestyle after years in the Los Angeles concrete jungle. Ask me anything!

In my practice, I believe that understanding your issues is the first step toward healing. With a holistic approach to psychiatric and medical management, I specialize in the medication management of ADHD, Anxiety, OCD, Trauma, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and Insomnia. As a board-certified adult psychiatrist, I bring unique depth to my clinical practice. I earned both my MD and PhD from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, grounding my approach to medication management in advanced scientific research and evidence-based medicine.

My leadership and clinical training within the University of Texas Health System—including roles as Chief Resident, Assistant Medical Director, and Assistant Professor—deeply shaped my view of mental health. Having cared for individuals across institutions like MD Anderson, Memorial Hermann, the Dunn Behavioral Sciences Center, and Maui Memorial Medical Center, I possess the outpatient and inpatient expertise required to manage complex clinical cases with complete confidence.

I provide convenient, high-quality telepsychiatry and virtual care for adults (ages 18 and older) actively located in Texas, California, Hawaii, and Alaska.

I am a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. I attended medical school at John A. Burns School of Medicine and triple board (general pediatrics, adult psychiatry, and child and adolescent psychiatry) residency at Brown University. It has been a privilege practice on my home island of Kaua'i since completing training in 2010.
