I will walk along side and help you develop strength and peace. I offer ways that can be helpful in managing trauma, stress, and dealing with communication and trust within relationships. My goal is to help you access internal resources and make adjustments that can be helpful. Since 2013, my focus has been working with individuals who are dealing with a variety of issues, including trauma. I enjoy working with a diverse population including individuals who are dealing with anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and grief, to develop a plan to bring positive changes.
My education has been focused on studying perspectives on personal development and emotional well-being. I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Comparative Human Development from the University of Chicago and my Master’s degree from the Columbia School of Social Work. Before working in private practice, I provided therapeutic services in a range of settings, including community mental health centers, NYC public schools and group practices.
I believe in a holistic focused approach to therapy. I incorporate mind, body and spirit to achieve a regulated emotional state and balance in one's life. Melissa ("Mel") Klootwyk, MSN, PMHNP-BC, is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over eight years of psychiatric mental health experience providing care across inpatient, PHP, IOP, and outpatient settings to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Mel has experience treating a broad spectrum of mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, to more complex mood, trauma-related, thought, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
I am passionate about helping support my clients in their process of self-discovery and healing. I believe that therapy can help us evolve in our relationships with others and most importantly with ourselves, as we heal from shame and trauma that results in behaviors and mindsets that are limiting and unhelpful. I believe in our resilience, and that as we heal from emotional wounds, we allow our true, authentic selves to evolve and thrive.
I have wanted to be a counselor from a young age. I received my undergraduate BA degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado and my graduate degree M.Ed clinical/ school counseling from the University of Phoenix. I also spent two years studying at the Denver Seminary to learn how to incorporate faith into counseling. I started out as a middle school counselor and also worked as a therapist in a counseling clinic. My passions are parent coaching, helping with anxiety disorders as well as depressive disorders.

Before I became a counselor I spent fifteen years teaching studio art and cultural studies courses at colleges and universities across the United States. As an artist, writer, former academic, and mental health counselor, I have dedicated my life to creating connection and depth in relationships.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the State of CO. I have received my Bachelor of Science in human services from Metropolitan State University, and my Master of Arts in school counseling and clinical counseling from the University of Northern Colorado.
