My name is Teresa Hernandez and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I have 20+ years working with Mental Health and Substance Abuse challenges.

I love working with adults and youth ages 11-80. I have worked with many modalities such DBT, CBT, Anger Management, Crisis intervention, Suicide Prevention, and Substance Abuse. I've worked with clients from many walks of life and with varied needs.

I earned my Master's Degree in Social Work at the University of Wyoming. Wyoming is my home state. It is filled with wildlife and the worst snow you can image. I moved to Colorado in 2010 to continue my quest for helping others. Many years ago, someone helped me and I having been giving back for more than 20+ years. Bruised Not Broken Therapy was born out of the lack of Afrocentric based psychotherapy that allowed people of color to embrace their journey of life through the context of color. HIV, substance abuse, mental health and the denial of the experience of being a person of color continues to plague communities of color, as we still have yet to talk about these experiences.

As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP), I provide evidence-based medication management to clients seeking care. Since becoming a PMHNP, I have worked in different settings such as community health and women’s health. I have a true passion for working with the LGBTQAI and BIPOC communities. I focus on empowering clients within these communities to help them understand possible treatments for their mental health concerns and provide a therapeutic approach to care.

I’m a licensed therapist with master’s degrees in both Philosophy and Clinical Counseling from the University of Colorado Denver. My work is guided by values of openness, empathy, and curiosity, and I see therapy as a collaborative space for growth and self-discovery. I strive to create an environment where clients feel genuinely seen, supported, and empowered to make meaningful changes. I work with adults and adolescents navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse, thought disorders, and life transitions, helping them build resilience and a deeper sense of fulfillment.

My priority is to provide a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space where you feel heard, respected, and supported. With over 40 years in healthcare—including service as a former Navy Nurse Corps Officer and retired military veteran—I bring values of resilience, trust, and teamwork into every therapeutic relationship. I view care as a partnership and work to empower you to take an active role in your mental health.

I provide pharmacotherapy (medication management) motivational interviewing, and other therapeutic modalities. We can assess during the first meeting if your treatment requires additional therapeutic support. I will provide a referral to a licensed therapist to ensure you receive comprehensive care. I hold a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work from Walden University, with a concentration in trauma-informed care. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), as well as certified in Art Therapy, Play Therapy, and Sandplay Therapy. My early career centered on supporting children and families navigating trauma, substance use, and instability, as well as individuals transitioning from incarceration and reintegrating into their communities. These experiences continue to shape my person-centered, integrative approach to care.

In my practice, I support adults and children through an individualized, holistic lens. My therapeutic philosophy draws from Person-Centered, Holistic, and Psychodynamic therapies—approaches that value empathy, self-awareness, and exploration of the connections between past and present. I believe all people have an innate capacity for growth, resilience, and healing when they are met with safety, compassion, and curiosity.
