I have additional experience working with survivors of domestic/intimate partner violence and human trafficking. I have recently obtained my credential as a Certified Trauma Professional (CTP).
My name is Dr. Llena Carter. I am originally from the southside of Chicago. I have lived in four different states and traveled to over 40; including teaching/traveling abroad for multiple summers. I have been a therapist for over 20 years and have a breadth of experience. I see therapy as a sacred space where trust and nonjudgment are essential. I am specifically passionate about providing support for persons of color and oppressed populations where therapy may be otherwise stigmatized. In my 20-plus years of clinical experience, I have worked with individuals, families as well as with couples and groups. My experience has stemmed from a variety of settings including domestic violence shelters, psychiatric units, juvenile detention centers, college campuses and private practice. I hold an MA and PhD in Counseling Psychology from Boston College and Indiana State University, where I received extensive training in multiculturalism and trauma-informed care. Over the past years, I’ve had the privilege of working in a variety of clinical settings—including university counseling centers and community mental health agencies—supporting individuals from all walks of life. I am a certified EMDR therapist and an approved consultant of the EMDRIA.
I am a Licensed Therapist with over two decades of experience, holding a Master’s degree in Social Work since 2003. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals and families from a wide range of ages, cultural backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, and gender identities. My approach is grounded in empathy, respect, and a deep commitment to supporting each client’s unique journey toward healing and personal growth.
