I believe that therapy should feel warm, collaborative, and authentic. I strive to create a space where you feel comfortable being yourself while receiving evidence-based care tailored to your goals. I specialize in working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, perfectionism, life transitions, and identity exploration, and I also specialize in EMDR therapy. I’m an LCSW, and my practice name, Life Shift Happens, comes from a truth I see every single day: people don’t come to therapy because they’re broken. They come because life stopped unfolding the way they expected, and they feel entirely stuck. A lot of the humans I work with are incredibly thoughtful and trying so hard. They usually don't lack insight; they’ve read the coping skills and talked things through with friends. Yet, they still find themselves procrastinating, shutting down, or feeling completely frozen by past stuff. When that happens, change isn’t a matter of forcing more willpower. It requires slowing down to look at the patterns and defense mechanisms we build to protect ourselves when life gets heavy.
My style is collaborative, deeply conversational, and entirely human. I’m not here to judge, lecture, or pretend I have all the answers. Instead, I’m active in our sessions through asking questions, noticing patterns, and gently pushing back when I see you getting in your own way. We will work on the practical things like boundaries, follow-through, and managing emotions, while sitting with the messy overthinking, panic, burnout, or feeling checked out underneath it all. Therapy with me is a relationship where we make sense of the sudden crises and quiet paralyses that come with life shifts. The goal isn’t a perfect, flawless life, but rather a therapeutic space where you can figure out what changed, sprinkle in compassion, and learn how to move forward in a way that feels genuinely your own.
With a background in working with individuals across various age groups, including children, teenagers, and adults, I bring extensive experience to our therapeutic relationship. My focus areas include ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, depression, anxiety, and complex PTSD. I understand that each individual's journey is unique, and I'm here to provide the support you need to navigate the challenges you may be facing.
Emily Biggs-Heisler, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Clinical Director and Co-Owner of Mountainside Behavioral Health.

I have been a Marriage and Family Therapist for 20 years. I am trained and experienced in several modalities including EMDR, mindfulness, Family Systems, Imago, the principles of Interpersonal Neurobiology and early attachment. It has been a profound privilege being on this journey with others. Participating in a process where others dive deep into their vulnerable truth, has given my life great meaning. I've been called to provide a space for others to be seen, heard, and known in the midst of their feelings of shame, guilt, fear, inadequacy, unworthiness, and vulnerability and through their experience of being more truly known be reminded of their profound value and worthiness
I have worked in the mental health field since 2001 and am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC). While I have extensive training and experience with adolescents and young adults, I also enjoy working with adults, families, and couples. I am trained in EMDR, an evidence-based trauma therapy, along with other trauma related techniques which I incorporate in my counseling work when indicated. I am also a skilled trainer in Motivational Interviewing, adolescent development, developmental trauma, and suicide prevention. In addition, I regularly utilize CBT and DBT skills and interventions as necessary in counseling sessions.
Regarding my philosophy of counseling, Glennon Melton, an author I admire, sums it up best: she describes life as “brutiful.” Brutiful blends the two words, “Beautiful” & “Brutal”, which sums up how we often experience our journeys in life. Life has its beautiful moments, it also has some difficult, hard times. When life feels painful and you need someone to talk to, I am someone who can provide a safe place to feel supported & heard. My goal is to provide a place for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and values in order to better understand yourself. Additionally, I work with you to learn and strengthen healthy coping strategies so the unhealthy ones are less appealing.
My clinical experience and training involves helping those with depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use, mood instability, anger, conflict, behavior/legal struggles, grief and loss, life transitions such as divorce, and adjustment issues.
