Most therapists treat what’s happening in your mind. I also look at what’s happening in your body.
I believe our brain is arguably the most important organ in the body — it is the command center for everything else. So why do we not put more emphasis on its health, and the ripple effect it has on our body and our lives? This question is at the heart of everything I do.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, EMDR-trained therapist, and Certified Personal Trainer. I graduated from Lindenwood University in Missouri with my Master of Arts in Professional Counseling in 2012, and founded Inspire Change Counseling in 2014 with a vision of creating a truly integrative approach to mental health care — one where clients receive a multi-disciplinary scope of care, not just a referral for medication.
With over 20 years of experience in the field of mental health, I am dedicated to supporting professionals in the helping profession as they navigate the complexities of their careers. My background includes 13 years of counseling and 17 years in outpatient community mental health, working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. With a Bachelor of Arts in Social Psychology from Park College and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Webster University, I am equipped with the academic foundation and practical experience to guide you effectively. Whether it's stress management, career guidance, or mental health support, you can trust that you are in capable hands.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Missouri with over three years of experience helping individuals navigate and process traumatic events. I am passionate about supporting clients in growing and excelling amid life's challenges. I want everyone to grow and become a healthier, more balanced version of themselves.
Carl Harbison Jr. is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with experience in behavioral health, crisis intervention, substance use treatment, suicide prevention, and helping individuals navigate some of life's most challenging circumstances. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Central Methodist University in 2013 and his Master of Science in Clinical Counseling in 2016.
Throughout his career, Carl has served as a Crisis Counselor, Mental Health and Substance Use Therapist, and Suicide Prevention and Firearm Safety Specialist. His approach is grounded in compassion, authenticity, and meeting people where they are. He strives to create a supportive, nonjudgmental environment where clients can openly address difficult experiences, recognize their strengths, develop practical coping skills, and work toward meaningful change.
Carl has extensive experience in suicide prevention, crisis response, and mental health education and is an instructor in ASIST, Construction Working Minds, QPR, CPI, and CSSH. His clinical interests include anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, grief and loss, substance use, life transitions, and working with veterans and first responders.
Carl is also a retired U.S. Army veteran, serving on active duty from 1990–1995 and with the Missouri Army National Guard from 2011–2024, including deployments to Kuwait, Afghanistan, and Syria. His military and clinical experiences provide a unique perspective on resilience, trauma, transition, and overcoming adversity.
Outside of his professional work, Carl is a husband, father of six, and grandfather of six. He believes therapy is about more than managing symptoms—it is about helping people develop the insight, confidence, skills, and resilience to move forward and create a healthier, more fulfilling life.
My ideal client is someone who feels overwhelmed, burned out, or stuck - whether from the pressures of work, family, trauma, or life transitions. They may be experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD symptoms, or the lingering effects of trauma. Many are high functioning professionals, first responders, healthcare workers, or veterans who've spent years putting others first and are now realizing their own mental health needs attention. They're seeking a provider who listens, validates, and offers practical, stigma-free care to ease symptoms, improve focus and sleep, and regain balance with a collaborative, holistic plan.
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I earned a bachelor’s degree in education in 2003 and a master’s degree in counseling in 2005, both from Missouri State University.
For the past 20 years, I have had the opportunity to work with students and parents, in high school, middle school and elementary settings, as an educator and Professional School Counselor. Over the years, I have also worked with many struggling youth during my role as a Missouri Options Liaison, as well as a Community Service Liaison, providing outreach in the community. More recently, I received court mediator training, which provided new insight into conflict resolution procedures. Prior to counseling, I was an elementary teacher, working with students to help them achieve academic goals, while also facilitating emotional growth, and social awareness as well.
For over 20 years I have worked with students of all ages, as well as many parents and families. I specialize in helping one navigate the neurodivergent brain, anxiety and depression in adolescent youth, family counseling, couple’s counseling, emotional and social struggles, as well as adults working through childhood trauma.
I am a psychotherapist specializing in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, trauma‐informed care, religious trauma, leaving influential groups, and integrative mind–body approaches. My work focuses on helping clients identify and transform the recurring emotional and relational patterns that often stem from unresolved trauma or early life experiences. By combining insight‐oriented therapy with energy work and the grounding wisdom of nature, I support clients in accessing deeper self‐understanding and creating lasting internal change.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I specialize in working with teens and adults who are navigating challenges such as stress, anxiety, depression, and relationship difficulties. I am passionate about helping clients recognize their strengths, overcome obstacles, and develop a stronger sense of identity.
As a lifelong Missouri resident and educator, I am very familiar with the specifics that come with living in this area.

Find the right addiction counselor for you
Headway makes it easier to find support for overcoming addiction — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Factors to Consider When Choosing an Addiction Therapist in Kansas City
Finding addiction therapists in Kansas City starts with looking for care that matches the specific concern you want support for. Addiction care can include support for alcohol use, drug use, gambling, compulsive behaviors, cravings, and relapse prevention. Many therapists list experience with approaches like motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy for substance use, harm reduction, or coordination with medication-assisted care. Some people also choose to work with a prescriber as part of their care team, so reading each therapist’s specialties and approach can help you identify the right fit.
Kansas City offers a range of local options, from in-person appointments near central neighborhoods to virtual therapy across Missouri. Virtual care can also expand access if you want a therapist with specific addiction experience, alcohol support services, or a background that aligns with your preferences. As you compare therapists, look at appointment availability, whether they offer a free phone consultation, and how they describe their communication style. Recovery can involve changes over time, so a non-judgmental therapist with experience in harm reduction or substance use support may be an important factor in your search.
Therapy in Kansas City can be a significant investment without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs and make ongoing care easier to plan for. Headway helps you find addiction therapists, many of whom accept insurance, are accepting new patients, and offer upfront cost estimates before you book. You can browse profiles, compare specialties, and schedule directly when you’re ready.
