My name is Toya Randi Fisher, and I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW, LCSW-C) with over 21 years of experience serving vulnerable populations across Washington, D.C. and Maryland. I hold a Master of Social Work from Catholic University of America and a B.A. in Psychology from Spelman College. I’ve worked extensively with adolescents, adults, families, and older adults, supporting clients facing complex life challenges, including family dynamics, relationship difficulties, anxiety, depression, and trauma. I also bring a strong background in leadership, program development, and crisis response, which allows me to approach therapy from both a clinical and systems-level perspective.
Welcome. I’m Dr. Tawnya H. Brown, a clinically licensed social worker based in Maryland and licensed to practice in MD, DC, and VA. For over 28 years, I have supported individuals and families through life’s most difficult and meaningful transitions, with a special focus on working with families, youth, and young adults.
Reaching out for support is one of the most important steps you can take as you begin a new chapter in your life. Whether you are dealing with depression, trauma, major life changes, difficult transitions, challenging relationship decisions, self-esteem or self-worth concerns, or simply feeling that the way you are managing life is not helping you move toward a better place, you do not have to walk through it alone.
I am here to walk alongside you with compassion, understanding, and hope. Together, we can work toward healing, clarity, and growth—and get to the other side of this stronger, healthier, and with renewed hope.
I’m a Licensed Clinical Therapist with over 12 years of experience working with children, adolescents, adults and geriatric populations. I’ve practiced in various settings such as outpatient mental health clinics, in-patient psychiatric hospitals, in-home and virtually. I specialize in anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, anger management issues along with trauma and abuse.
Dr. Lakitha Owens is a hearing, Black, cisgendered woman, she has a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Gallaudet University. She is the founder of Purple Cares, which seeks to provide caring and compassionate mental health services to children and adults.
You weren't meant to carry the weight of life alone. Healing begins when you have a safe space to pause, reflect, and be fully seen, heard, and supported without judgment. My goal is to help you reconnect with your strengths, gain clarity, and move forward with intention. Whether you're facing anxiety, depression, relationship concerns, life transitions, grief, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, impulse control challenges, or recovering from domestic violence, we'll work together to understand what's beneath the surface, develop practical tools for lasting change, and create a life rooted in balance, resilience, and hope.
My interest is to provide a supportive and collaborative approach to therapy so we can work to address issues such as anxiety, depression, past traumas, grief and loss, and parenting and relationship challenges. I appreciate working with people going through periods of transition and those hoping to implement lasting change. Although I enjoy working with people to build better relationships, I do not do couples counseling.
I’m a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW-C) with over five years of experience helping adults manage anxiety, ADHD, substance use, and relationship stress. My approach is practical and collaborative—I help you find real steps that make life feel steadier and more manageable. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in roles that taught me what real stress looks like, which helps me stay grounded and relatable in the room.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Therapist in District of Columbia
Searching for therapists in DC starts with finding someone whose experience matches what you want to address. Across the District of Columbia, therapy needs and available therapists can vary by neighborhood, schedule, and care format. You may be looking for support with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, work stress, or life transitions. As you compare DC therapists, look for specialties, approaches, and training that match your needs, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed care, couples therapy, or experience supporting people through major life changes.
Location and logistics can shape whether a therapist is a strong fit. In Washington, Capitol Hill, and Georgetown, some people prefer an office that works with their commute, while others choose virtual sessions for more flexibility. It can also help to compare appointment availability, whether a therapist is accepting new clients, and whether they offer a free phone consultation. Reading therapist bios before booking can show you how each therapist describes their style, session structure, and areas of focus, so you can make a more informed choice.
Therapy in the District of Columbia can be expensive without insurance, and using in-network coverage is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs. Headway helps you search for therapists who match your preferences, verify your insurance, and see your estimated cost before you book. Nationally, Headway partners with over 100 insurance plans, and your specific coverage depends on your plan and location. You can browse therapists, review bios, and book directly when you’re ready.
If you're experiencing or worried about violence, threats, or coercion in your relationship, couples therapy isn't usually the right starting point — individual support is safer. The National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788) can help you think through next steps.
