I am Lakesha Duncan, a Licensed Professional Counselor who believes that people are more than their diagnoses, addictions, past experiences, or mistakes. My purpose is to provide a safe and compassionate space where clients feel heard, respected, and supported as they work toward healing, stability, and a renewed sense of purpose.
I earned a Master’s degree in Addiction Counseling and a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University. My education and professional background have prepared me to address both mental health and substance-use concerns, including the complex relationship between trauma, emotional distress, life experiences, and addictive behaviors.
I have extensive experience providing counseling, clinical leadership, and behavioral health services in outpatient, residential, and community-based settings. I work primarily with adults, including individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance-use disorders.
My areas of experience include trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, addiction and recovery, relapse concerns, anger, relationship and family difficulties, low self-worth, and major life transitions. I also support individuals rebuilding their lives after hospitalization, incarceration, homelessness, family separation, or other significant disruptions.
I understand that beginning counseling can feel uncomfortable, especially when you have experienced loss, disappointment, judgment, or difficulty trusting others. My counseling style is warm, down-to-earth, culturally responsive, honest, and nonjudgmental. I will meet you where you are while encouraging you to recognize your strengths and move toward the life you want to create.
I believe while our minds carry our emotional stress, our bodies do, too. My passion is helping my clients resolve deeper problems hidden beneath the current patterns. Whatever has you feeling stuck, I am looking forward to be a source of energy and direction as you choose to become unstuck. I have experience in trauma, mood disorders, personality disorders, anger management, stress management, relationship issues etc. The population I most serve is in adolescents 13 -17 yrs, adult 18 and up.
As a provider with 40+ years of sobriety, I offer real solutions for substance abuse problems. What makes my practice unique is my personal and professional background in disabilities that goes decades in Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, hearing and vision impairments, severe mental illness (psychosis) and cerebral palsy. In addition, I have completed Certificates In Jungian Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with adolescents and Young Adults, TF-CBT (trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy) and Compassionate Bereavement Care. My education includes a M.S. in Special Education at Johns Hopkins, post-graduate certificate in Behaviors in Autism from University of Massachusetts Lowell, a MSW from Western New Mexico University, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from University of Southern California. In addition, I serve all ages.
Taking the first step toward therapy can feel both hopeful and overwhelming. My goal is to create a safe, supportive, and judgment-free space where you can feel heard, understood, and empowered to move toward the life you want. I am a licensed behavioral health professional and clinical leader with more than 15 years of experience in mental health, behavioral health, higher education, human resources, customer service, and operations. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and supporting people through some of life’s most challenging moments.
Are you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or empty or even struggling to get through the day? I am a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP-BC). I am a compassionate, understanding, and good listener. I help individuals navigate emotional struggles using a holistic and evidence-based approach to mental health care. I conduct psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and provide brief psychotherapy. I work with individuals of all ages who are struggling with conditions such as ADHD, anxiety, depression, insomnia, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, Schizophrenia, and coping skills. I love to support you in your journey to better mental health.
I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. I want to help you achieve whatever solutions and life changes you are looking for and enjoy the process along the way. It does not have to be all bad. There are reasons why you think a certain way, do not have control over emotions or repeat mistakes. Let us get to the bottom of those reasons.
I want you to find meaning/purpose in school, work, family and friendships. Give yourself the opportunity to feel confident living life; knowing you have the awareness and skills to adjust. As a parent, I want you to be free from the pain of worrying, knowing that someone is there to help your child work through their depression/anger and anxiety/stress.
During the 15+ years, I have helped children, adolescents and young adults find healing and understanding in distressed times; a good deal of my career has focused on the needs of this unique age group specifically specializing in mood disorders, depression, anxiety-related issues, and social skill difficulties.
