As a therapist, I see it as a tremendous responsibility to serve others in their best interest while honoring their autonomy and path. I believe coming to therapy is courageous, and you should feel accepted without judgment. I work with clients from teenagers to seniors navigating anxiety, depression, relationships, emotional regulation, stress, and life transitions. I especially enjoy helping those who feel stuck or overwhelmed understand their story and patterns, while taking meaningful steps toward a more intentional life. I sit beside you, help you understand, and pair insight with practical tools and meaningful action.

Rooted in my graduate training at the University of Rhode Island, I developed expertise in both general clinical and health psychology. I developed a programmatic line of research in health promotion (adoption and maintenance of multiple health behaviors including exercise, smoking cessation and nutritious eating) with a particular focus on exercise motivation as a gateway to adopting other health behaviors.

During my internship and postdoctoral training at VA Connecticut and VA Boston, respectively, my research evolved towards integrating health behavior change (e.g., exercise adoption and maintenance) with veterans suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain and PTSD. As I learned more about the biopsychosocial model of these medically and psychiatrically complex disorders, my ultimate goal became to help veterans better manage their pain and PTSD symptoms, utilizing health behavior change as a complementary component of their overall treatment program. With this approach, the ultimate goal was to help them improve their overall quality of life and well-being, long-term.

My patient oriented research experience, over the past thirteen years, directly informed my approach to my clinical work with individual patients. In fact, I worked for Newton-Wellesley Eating Disorders and Behavioral Medicine for the past fifteen years. As part of this work, I focused on helping individuals suffering from the full continuum of eating disorders (Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder) to sustain their recovery long-term and achieve "recovery maintenance" through establishment and achievement of additional life goals and to move beyond their "eating disorder" identity to a "whole person" identity to create a more meaningful life post-recovery. Additionally, as part of this practice, I treated patients suffering from anxiety, PTSD, chronic musculoskeletal pain and depression as well as veterans from the community.

Hello, I’m Jose — a board-certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. My background includes years of experience as a bedside nurse in inpatient medical-surgical and behavioral health settings, caring for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Through my training and practice, I’ve learned that every path to wellness is deeply personal. I’m passionate about collaborating with clients to understand their needs, build on their strengths, and take a motivational, compassionate approach to care.

I also recognize how difficult it can be to find LGBTQIA-affirming mental health support. My work is grounded in helping individuals release shame, embrace authenticity, and find balance through life’s challenges. Whether you’re navigating addiction, anxiety, depression, trauma, or seeking affirming, identity-centered care, my goal is to support you in thriving and becoming your fullest self.

Find the right therapist for you

Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Therapist in Boston

Searching for therapists in Boston starts with finding someone whose training matches what you want support with. Boston has a broad community of therapists across neighborhoods like Back Bay, South End, Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, and Cambridge, which gives you many options to compare. You may be looking for support with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, work stress, or life transitions. As you review Boston therapists, look for specialties, therapy styles, and listed experience that align with your needs, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, trauma-informed care, or support for specific life stages.

In a large city like Boston, more options can make it harder to narrow the search. Location may matter if you want in-person therapy near home, work, school, or a transit route, while virtual appointments may fit better if your schedule changes from week to week. Beyond specialty, consider appointment availability, whether the therapist is accepting new patients, and whether they offer a free phone consultation. Reading therapist bios can help you compare communication style, approach, and what sessions may be like before you book.

Therapy in Boston can be a significant expense without insurance, and using in-network coverage is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs. Headway helps you find therapists who accept a wide range of insurance plans, verify your benefits, and show an estimated out-of-pocket cost before your first session. You can filter for therapists in Boston by insurance, specialty, availability, and appointment format, then review profiles and book directly when youre ready.

1 Cost may vary based on your location, age, and insurance coverage.
