I am a board-certified adult psychiatrist with more than 22 years of experience providing compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care in inpatient, outpatient, consultation-liaison, and telepsychiatry settings.
Throughout my career, I have helped adults struggling with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, trauma-related conditions, somatic symptom disorders, and other complex psychiatric illnesses. Hi, I am Susan. I am a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with more than 30 years of experience in psychiatry, caring for adults with a wide range of mental health needs. I earned my BSN from Skidmore College, my MSN from Fairfield University, and I also completed training in Behavioral Sleep Medicine and adult sleep disorders at the University of Pennsylvania. Over the years, I have supported adults living with mood disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, and ADHD, and I have also worked closely with parents and caregivers of children and adult children with special needs.
My path to becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner was inspired by personal experiences. The stigma of mental health obstructs many people's journeys to achieving happiness. As a US Army Veteran, I have seen firsthand how this affects the lives of those struggling and their families. My goal is to enhance awareness and reduce the stigma.
Welcome to my practice! For the past past 4 years, I have been working as a board certified inpatient psychiatric APRN on an acute behavioral health unit. Throughout my experience, I have worked with a multitude of patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and personality disorders.
I am a board-certified psychiatrist with a passion for helping individuals achieve mental well-being through innovative and compassionate care. As the author of The Guide to Treating Depression and a regular contributor to The Carlat Psychiatry Report—an independent journal free from pharmaceutical funding—I am committed to providing evidence-based, patient-centered care.

Find the right psychiatrist for you
Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Therapist in Southbury
Finding the right psychiatrist in Southbury, CT starts with understanding what kind of care you need. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and monitor your response over time. If you're looking for help with anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, or medication management, a psychiatrist may be the right fit. Psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) can also prescribe and manage medication and are another option available through Headway.
Southbury is a smaller community, and the number of local psychiatrists accepting new patients can be limited. Expanding your search to include nearby areas like Woodbury, Newtown, Middlebury, and Waterbury — or considering virtual appointments — can open up more options. Reading a provider's bio before booking can help you understand their approach, specialties, and whether they're a good match for your needs.
Psychiatry sessions can be expensive without insurance. Using your in-network benefits is one of the most reliable ways to lower your out-of-pocket costs. On Headway, you can enter your insurance details to see estimated session costs upfront, and many patients pay as low as $0 per visit. Nationally, Headway partners with over 100 insurance plans, making it easier to find a psychiatrist who is both the right clinical fit and covered by your plan.
