Find the right psychiatrist for you
Headway makes it easy to find support for your mental health — from finding the right provider, to understanding costs, to scheduling with ease.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Psychiatrist in Ann Arbor, MI
Finding the right psychiatrist in Ann Arbor starts with understanding the kind of care you want. Psychiatrists and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe medication, and manage medication over time. Therapists provide talk therapy and may work with you alongside a prescriber. If you’re looking for support with anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or medication management, look for a psychiatrist whose listed specialties and training match your needs.
Ann Arbor has a focused local mental health care market, so nearby in-person psychiatry appointments may be more limited by location and schedule. Virtual appointments can expand your options across Michigan while still giving you access to licensed psychiatrists who fit your preferences. As you compare psychiatrists, consider appointment availability, whether they offer free phone consultations, and how they describe their approach in their bios. Psychiatric medication management appointments are often shorter and less frequent than therapy sessions. Some psychiatrists also offer therapy, and some people work with both a therapist and a prescriber.
Psychiatric care in Ann Arbor can be a significant expense without insurance. Using in-network insurance is one of the most reliable ways to reduce session costs and understand what you may pay before care begins. Headway helps you search for psychiatrists who are accepting new patients, verify your insurance, and see your estimated out-of-pocket cost before you book. You can review bios, compare virtual and in-person options, and book directly when you’re ready.
If you're already taking psychiatric medication and considering switching providers, talk to your current prescriber before changing or stopping any medication — most psychiatric medications shouldn't be stopped abruptly. Anyone experiencing thoughts of self-harm or in acute crisis should call 988 or go to the nearest emergency department rather than wait for an outpatient appointment.
