How to take a great headshot
The first thing potential clients see
Your headshot is often the first thing a person will see when they find you in a directory or visit your website. Here are 5 ways you can put your best photo forward.
Step One
Light it up
Data shows that lighter photos result in more clicks than darker photos. Try your photoshoot during "golden hour," which happens either in the morning or early evening just before sunset. If a fancy studio isn't in the cards, natural light is your friend.
Step Two
Match your clothes to your style
Simple outfit colors tend to work better, but don't be afraid to let your unique style shine through. Play around with different tops and accessories to find the combo that works for you.
Step Three
Focus on photo quality
A high-quality, professional-looking photo is crucial. If possible, use a tripod or ask someone else to take your photo. Consider hiring a professional photographer for a polished finish.
Step Four
Don’t forget the background
Choose a clean and simple backdrop that won't be distracting. Make sure it doesn't blend in with your clothing, and think about what it communicates. Are you a busy professional in the city? A yoga enthusiast? A contemplative guide? Pick a background that reflects your personality, style and expertise.
Step Five
Find inspiration
Take a few minutes to scroll through Psychology Today and consider what makes a good headshot. Which poses and styles do you prefer? With these tips and resources, you'll be well on your way to a high-quality headshot that helps you connect with more clients.
