Frequently asked questions

Many insurance plans now include mental health benefits that cover therapy. We look up your benefits to check if your plan covers therapy, and you can reference your plan’s Explanation of Benefits or contact your insurance company for more details. If your plan covers therapy, you’ll want to find a therapist who is in-network with your insurance to make the most of your benefits.
The cost of a therapy session depends on a few things: your individual insurance plan, the therapist’s training, location, and session length. We use your insurance information to calculate your out-of-pocket price per session. You won’t be billed until after your session.
When you enter your insurance information and therapist preferences into the search tool, we’ll show you recommended therapists who accept your insurance and match your needs.

Therapists on Headway currently accept Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Cigna, Oscar, Oxford, United Healthcare, and all Optum affiliates. If we’re not taking your insurance yet, keep an eye out. We’re growing quickly and partnering with even more insurance companies to bring affordable mental health care to everyone.

Please note: if your plan is affiliated with Medicaid or Medicare, we will not be able to accept your insurance at this time. Reach out to us if you’re looking for some resources. We’re happy to send over some options that work with your plan.

Your payment information is required to book a session, but you won’t be charged until after the session has occurred. Before the session, your payment information is only used to ensure that session payments and no-show fees can be collected.

If your sessions are covered entirely by insurance, we still ask for a payment method in case of any cancellation fees, which are always communicated ahead of time.

Headway is completely free to use. We provide in-network therapist recommendations and appointment slots at no cost to you. You’ll only pay for therapy, never for using Headway.
