About Headway

Why Headway doesn’t charge a membership fee for providers

Our vast network of providers like you makes it possible to secure better rates for everyone — without charging a membership fee to use our platform.

Headway makes working with insurance easy and profitable for mental healthcare providers — and we do it all without charging a monthly or annual membership fee.

So, how does that work?

Our vast network of providers like you makes it possible to secure better rates for everyone — without charging a membership fee to use our platform.

Better rates, passed on to providers

How does Headway make money? Because we are the nation’s largest network of therapists and psychiatrists accepting insurance, we’re able to secure enhanced rates for your sessions with insurance plans through integrated partnerships. Most of that enhanced rate is passed on to you as a provider, and a small part of it is retained by Headway in order to keep our service and platform free for patients and providers to use.

After your provider rate is secured, only then do we determine when and where Headway can earn revenue to enable us to operate the platform. Our first priority is paying providers competitively, so Headway doesn’t earn the same amount across the board — it varies across license type, states, insurance plans, and billing codes

How much does Headway pay therapists?

Rates for Headway providers vary depending on factors like license type and insurance plan. Headway can match you with a practice consultant who can quote rates for your practice in your first call together.

How Headway partners and negotiates for you

Headway works directly with health plans to showcase the value our network of clinicians (including you!) bring to the mental healthcare landscape.

Our Payer team includes more than 30 individuals who establish, maintain, and grow relationships with senior people at health plans who are working to improve mental health care offerings for its members. The Headway Payer team has impactful conversations on behalf of our provider community to negotiate contracts, review rates, and build strong operations to facilitate care for your clients. Through these relationships, the team is able to learn what’s most important to each individual health plan, such that we can best showcase our value and get the best possible contract.

If you want an inside look at how our team works with health plans to advocate for the best possible arrangements, watch our video — Enhancing relationships with health plans — to hear Headway’s clinical education lead, Michael Heckendorn, explain more.
