As the year comes to a close, we are thrilled to share that Headway is now serving people in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Individuals seeking care can search on headway.co to find a provider who meets their needs, accepts their insurance, and has availability in the next two weeks. Currently, more than 25 health insurance plans are covered through Headway. Evernorth (Cigna) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts are two of the named health insurance companies with plans to go live with Headway in all 50 states and DC.

We have more than 27,000 mental health providers from every state in the country to thank as we reach this major milestone. Their clinical expertise, and commitment to providing access to care by actively taking insurance, has made this possible.

Supporting providers to deliver personalized care

Headway supports the delivery of both in-person and virtual mental health care. In scaling nationally, we have built dense local networks of providers in markets across the country. We believe that healthcare is local and have providers in all 50 states and DC.

In a post-pandemic world, it’s more important than ever to support people in getting care in the best way for them. For patients, this may include virtual or hybrid care. For providers, this may include practicing in multiple states where they are licensed to serve a more diverse patient population or ensure continuity of care for patients who relocate.

To support flexibility for providers, as well as patients’ access to the right care, we are rolling out technology in the first half of 2024 to allow providers who hold multiple licenses to seamlessly deliver care across state lines through the Headway platform. We’re excited to support the more than 25% of our providers who are currently licensed in multiple states.

Working with a regional Blues plan to improve access for out-of-state members

Moreover, we are working closely with regional health insurance companies to help members who live out of state access in-network mental health care through Headway.

In 2023, we worked with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBS MA) to help those members who live outside the state of Massachusetts get in-network mental health care through Headway. We’re proud to share that by now, out-of-state BCBS MA members see a provider through Headway on average 4.3 days after booking, and 87% stay with their provider through their third visit.

Headway’s national expansion announcement comes on the heels of a year of significant milestones. This year, we received a meaningful vote of confidence from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas, which saw a 5% reduction in inpatient acute behavioral health admissions since 2021, which it correlates with Headway’s ability to connect outpatient members to behavioral health care within 48 hours.
