Having initially entered the substance abuse treatment field 35 years ago, I completed a Masters in Clinical Social work and began work as a psychotherapist in both mental health agencies and private practice. I have over 25 years as a licensed clinical social worker. I also have a license as a substance abuse treatment practitioner.

I have supervised other therapists and I have expertise in the treatment of co-occurring (mental health & substance use) disorders and trauma.

My style is warm, accepting, and open-minded, but I believe in focus and clarity. Therapy should assist people to identify internal goals, roadblocks to achieving those goals and tools to bring about change.

I utilize cognitive-behavioral, emotion-focused, and psychodynamic therapies to help people resolve emotional conflicts, develop self-awareness/acceptance and increase coping skills, constructive behaviors, and thought patterns.

The first session focuses on problem-identification and background. We set goals such as processing trauma, improving relationships, regulating anxiety or reducing depression. The therapist and client must have a common focus. I don't frequently give "homework", but I often ask that clients practice some skills, such as mindfulness and self-observation between sessions. Therapy should be based on empathy and respect. A warm, encouraging and honest therapeutic relationship is critical.
