I believe counseling and therapy should be useful and practical. I like to use different examples and different exercises to help my patients; not every exercise or example is going to work for everyone; therefore I use different ones. My goal is to provide you the skills and the ability to handle your stressors on your own, so you won’t need me anymore, but if at any point, you need to check in again and need a refresher, I will be there for you. If anything new comes up and you need someone to talk to; I will be there for you as well. The therapeutic method I mainly use is CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy); but I use different ones as well; it really depends on the issues the patient comes in with. One important aspect about therapy is: it isn’t going to be easy. We are going to talk about hard topics and some you may not be ready to talk about; and that is okay. We will move at your pace. Getting better shouldn’t feel rushed. Remember, the issues that we are going to address didn’t happen overnight; therefore it isn’t going to get better overnight either. There are also going to be moments when we disagree with each other and that is okay too; I strongly recommend and encourage you to speak to me about how you feel; and we, like a team, can address any concerns or questions you may have.
I graduated with my Master in Forensic Mental Health Counseling from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. I worked with inmates for several years and moved onto outpatient therapy. I have experience working with acute ill patients since I have worked in a psychiatric emergency department in a hospital. I have worked with patients as young as three years old and any adult age. I have experience doing therapy virtually and I have found it to be very refreshing. Patients should not feel rushed, since many are doing it from home. If this is your first time doing virtual therapy; it is okay, I will be here to help you get more comfortable with using it.
